Dog Diseases – Canine Flea Damage

Fleas are a blood-sucking ectoparasite. Once a dog is infected with fleas, it will affect its normal life. There are two main hazards of fleas to dogs: one is that fleas can transmit infectious diseases and parasitic diseases, and the other is that fleas are strongly irritating to the skin and cause severe itching. Dogs scratching hard can cause skin damage, and harassing dogs can not rest well, causing loss of appetite and weight loss.

Pathogen and life history

Fleas do not live on dogs for most of their lives. Because fleas are afraid of light, they are often hidden in the bedding of the kennel or in cracks in the floor. They only parasitize on the dog when they suck blood and lay eggs. One female flea can lay 100 to 200 eggs. Flea eggs are oval with pointed ends, white, and difficult to see with the naked eye. As the dog moves, flea eggs can fall off. Thereby scattered in the dog’s activity area. It takes about 21 days for fleas to hatch from eggs to adults. In colder climates, the time may be longer. The newly hatched fleas can live without food for several weeks, waiting for the arrival of the dog.

Diagnosis points

The clinical symptoms of this disease are mainly itching. Sick dogs are manifested by scratching, rubbing and biting their coat. Causes hair loss, broken hair and abrasions, and fluid leaks out of severe skin abrasion. Even purulent wounds are formed. Sometimes it can cause allergic reactions and form eczema. Found that dogs have the above symptoms. It is necessary to carefully check the coat on the neck and the base of the tail. During the inspection, comb the coat against the direction of hair growth and observe the roots and skin of the hair. If fleas or flea feces are found, the diagnosis can be confirmed. A piece of wet white paper can also be used. Put it under the dog and comb the hair with a comb, and the excrement of fleas will continuously fall on the white paper. This can be diagnosed.

Prevention

Both commercially available flea powder and general insecticides can kill the adult flea, but flea eggs are highly resistant to drugs and difficult to kill. It must be sprayed several times in a row, usually once a week for more than one month. While killing canine fleas, the dog’s activity area, especially the dog’s utensils, must be thoroughly disinfected. All the bedding of the kennel shall be replaced, and the replaced items shall be burned. Dogs with abrasions on the skin should be debrided, disinfected and prevented from infection Pay attention to dog body hygiene at ordinary times. Take a bath often, comb frequently, and get more sunshine. It is an effective way to prevent flea damage. In addition, using anti-flea collars is also a good way. This kind of collar contains flea-killing drugs, and there are many small holes on the collar. The drugs leak out through the small holes, and most of the dog’s body is spread on it. It can expel or kill fleas. But it should be noted that s ome dogs can cause skin allergies for long-term use.
